THE BODIES OF THE SEX/GENDER SYSTEM: THEORETICAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF JUDITH BUTLER

Abstract

This article presents some general guidelines on the sex/gender distinction and its impact on the definition of the body category in feminist theory. Next, arguments are presented that question sexual dimorphism in natural terms, based on Judith Butler's concepts, the ambiguity of intersexual bodies and certain subversive bodily practices. In this line, essentialist and constructivist approaches are exposed in relation to the body, illustrated from the proposals of Luce Irigaray and Judith Butler. Finally, it is concluded that there is a need to discuss the category of sex as a privileged opportunity to reformulate the multiple concepts that involve the dimension of the body.
