Regular physical activity is an important strategy for promoting health and quality of life. In addition to the benefits associated with exercise itself, the environment in which it is performed has been investigated as a possible component capable of influencing psychological responses, perceived exertion, attention, mood, well-being, and connectedness to nature. This article aims to analyze the impacts of physical activity performed in natural environments on physical health, mental health, and quality of life. This is a qualitative literature review based on four selected scientific documents addressing outdoor and indoor exercise, connectedness to nature, well-being, performance, and nature sports. The analysis was organized into three axes: physical health, mental health, and quality of life. The review is expected to show that exercise in natural environments may broaden the exercise experience, especially regarding psychological and subjective aspects, without indiscriminately supporting the idea of physiological superiority of outdoor exercise over indoor exercise. It is also expected to highlight the relevance of contact with nature, enjoyment, adherence, social interaction, and diversity of bodily experiences for Physical Education practice.
