MUSIC AS AN EXPRESSION OF IDENTITY AND INCLUSION

Abstract

Music, as an artistic and cultural expression, constitutes an important means of expressing individual and collective identity, as well as being a significant tool for promoting social and cultural inclusion. This scientific article aims to analyze the role of music in the construction of identities and inclusion processes, highlighting how it contributes to the formation of social bonds, the appreciation of differences, and the promotion of dialogue between diverse cultures. Using an interdisciplinary approach, grounded in studies of sociology, anthropology, and music education, the article discusses how music reflects the values, memories, and experiences of historically marginalized social groups, becoming a space for resistance, affirmation, and belonging. Throughout the text, evidence is presented that collective musical practices—such as choirs, percussion groups, samba circles, marching bands, and socio-educational projects—contribute to strengthening participants' self-esteem and cultural identity. Furthermore, music is analyzed as an inclusive pedagogical tool, capable of integrating people with disabilities, stimulating nonverbal communication, and developing socio-emotional skills. Such practices reinforce the idea that musicality is present in all individuals, regardless of their physical, cognitive, or social limitations, highlighting music's potential as an agent of transformation and inclusion. The results indicate that music transcends linguistic and social barriers, promoting empathy, solidarity, and respect for diversity. It is concluded that understanding music as an expression of identity and inclusion recognizes its essential role in civic development and in building more just and pluralistic societies. Thus, this study reaffirms the importance of music as a universal language that unites, educates, and strengthens human bonds.
