Abstract

The improper disposal of used cooking oil poses a challenge for waste management and can contribute to environmental pollution and issues within sewage systems. This article analyzes a socio-environmental project that proposed collecting this waste, transforming it into handmade soap, and distributing the product to community laundries, families, and partner institutions. The research is descriptive and exploratory, based on a document analysis of the project’s final report and a comparison of its activities with existing literature on waste, the circular economy, and environmental education. The document records educational campaigns, discussion circles, meetings with local residents, the establishment of collection points, soap production (involving the use of protective equipment), and various distribution and community mobilization efforts. It also identifies challenges related to the consistency of collection, the standardization of production, participant training, quality assessment, and a lack of performance indicators. Although the report claims environmental and social benefits, it provides no quantitative data regarding the volume of oil collected, the amount of soap produced, or the number of beneficiaries; consequently, it is not possible to measure the alleged impacts. The study concludes that while the initiative shows educational and community-building potential, its evaluation and long-term viability depend on systematic record-keeping, the implementation of safety protocols, and technical verification of the product.
