Abstract

It is known that a large part of infrastructure works, which use reinforced concrete structures located near marine environments, suffer from very severe deterioration. In order to discuss this subject, the main theoretical bases are mentioned to show the importance of the topic for engineers in the field. The objective of the research is to present the concepts and processes related to reinforced concrete structures in marine environments, where the degree of aggressiveness to these structural elements is intense. The work was carried out through bibliographic research in theses, dissertations, monographs, articles and periodicals by renowned authors with extensive experience in these types of works. The results obtained from the research were that the concepts of service life and durability, knowledge about the chemical composition of the ocean, the deterioration processes in reinforced concrete structures and the models used for maintaining durability are of essential relevance for constructing works with reinforced concrete structures in this type of environment. The research concluded that technical and scientific knowledge about the factors involved in reinforced concrete structures in marine environments is essential to achieve durability and service life in infrastructure projects in aggressive environments.
