Abstract

From the first rudimentary constructions made of clay and stone to ultra-modern skyscrapers that defy gravity, building materials have played a central role in the advancement of engineering and the evolution of cities. The history of humanity is marked by the ability to transform raw materials into increasingly resistant, efficient and innovative structures.
The materials revolution has had a profound impact on many areas, and in civil engineering this is reflected in the development of concrete and mortar. In the past, the simple use of lime and sand allowed the construction of monuments that defied centuries. Today, new formulations and advanced techniques enable more durable, sustainable buildings that are adapted to the needs of modern society. High-performance concrete, self-compacting concrete, translucent concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete are just a few examples of innovations that expand construction possibilities.
The study of concrete and mortar goes far beyond the mixture of cement, water and aggregates. It involves science, technology and engineering to understand and control its properties in the fresh and hardened state, ensuring quality, safety and efficiency in construction. Precise dosage, additives, adequate curing and laboratory tests are essential factors to ensure a material with optimal performance.
This book invites you to explore this fascinating universe, covering everything from the fundamentals of dosage and composition to the properties and applications of concrete and mortars. In each chapter, we will delve into the concepts that transformed these materials into the basis of modern construction, revealing the secrets that guarantee their resistance, durability and versatility.
Get ready for a journey of knowledge and innovation, understanding how materials science shapes the world around us and drives the future of civil engineering.
