This study analyzes the administrative responsibility of the State of Piauí regarding illegal deforestation in the Caatinga, understood as a form of ecocide. Its overall objective is to examine the extent to which state inaction and the ineffectiveness of public environmental policies constitute a violation of the constitutional duty to protect the environment. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative, deductive approach, using bibliographic and documentary research, drawing on authors such as Édis Milaré, Celso Antônio Bandeira de Mello, and Paulo Affonso Leme Machado. The results indicate that the weakness of the State of Piauí's oversight activities has contributed to the increase in deforestation, revealing the need for more effective public policies and stricter state accountability regarding environmental protection.
