This article aimed to analyze students' perceptions regarding Physical Education classes in state public high schools. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with descriptive objectives, utilizing both bibliographic and field research as data sources. To meet the proposed objectives, a non-probability convenience sample of high school students was used. The instrument employed was a questionnaire regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in Physical Education classes, originally proposed by Kobal (1996). Data were collected, processed using statistical software, and analyzed through content analysis. The results revealed that, despite limitations in the infrastructure available for Physical Education classes, students recognized the subject's importance for their physical, mental, and academic development. Participants highlighted benefits related to health, the encouragement of physical activity, the learning of sports disciplines, and improvements in concentration and well-being. However, factors that undermine the perceived value of the subject were also identified. Therefore, these results reinforce the need for better working conditions and the enhancement of pedagogical practices to strengthen the role of Physical Education within the school context.
