This article analyzes the experience of social cartography developed in the traditional riverside community of Curuperé Grande, located in the rural area of the municipality of Abaetetuba, in the northeast of the state of Pará, based on the internship practice of the Specialization course in Geotechnologies Applied to Rural Territorial Development at the Federal University of Pará. It starts from the theoretical premise that social cartography is based on the principle of self-representation of the subject who appropriates the territory and constructs their identity within it, distinguishing itself from conventional cartography by the protagonism conferred on the mapped social agents. Methodologically, the study combines bibliographic research, a qualitative approach, and field research, using direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and a questionnaire with open-ended questions applied to the residents. The results show that the community has been experiencing, since the installation of an agro-industrial enterprise nearby, processes of degradation of the stream that historically sustained its subsistence, leisure, and sociability practices, which reinforces the urgency of participatory instruments for territorial reading.
