AN ANALYSIS OF THE PELÉ LAW AND THE DIFFICULTIES OF GENDER PARITY IN FOOTBALL

Abstract

The Pelé Law, officially known as Law nº 9,615/1998, is legislation that regulates sport in Brazil, including football. Although it has introduced significant changes to the sporting scenario, such as the modernization of labor relations and the creation of the athlete training contract, it also presents challenges that directly affect gender equality in football. Football is one of the most popular sports in the world, but it has historically been dominated by men. Women's participation in football still faces significant barriers, including a lack of visibility, funding and opportunities for players. The research begins with a detailed analysis of the Pelé Law, identifying its football-relevant provisions and highlighting areas where gender disparities may arise. Next, case studies and examples are explored that demonstrate how law enforcement affects players and the development of women's football in Brazil. It also discusses initiatives and policy proposals that aim to promote gender parity in football and improve the situation of female players. The research highlights the importance of addressing gender issues in sport and highlights the need for more inclusive and equitable sports legislation.
