THE USE OF METHYLPHENIDATE AS A DRUG OF ABUSE AMONG ACADEMICS

Abstract

Methylphenidate hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Ritalin®, is indicated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy (a disorder that causes an uncontrollable increase in sleep). The medication blocks the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, stimulating an increase in concentration levels. It is sold only with medical prescription and controlled prescription, but it has been acquired illegally by students to achieve an improvement in brain activity during the period of academic studies, causing dependence. The methodology used to carry out this work was based on theoretical research in archives from 2019 to 2023. In conclusion, this article develops the impact of the use of Methylphenidate as a drug of abuse among academic students and shows its benefits and harms to health.
