Abstract

Intensified consumption and the improper disposal of solid waste have exacerbated large-scale environmental problems, such as global warming, water and soil pollution, and the plastic pollution crisis. In this context, environmental education for children—particularly in low-income communities—serves as a key strategy for fostering socio-environmental values and promoting sustainable practices from an early age. This article presents and analyzes an environmental education outreach project carried out by Psychology undergraduates from UniFAPCE at the Unified Arts and Sports Center (CEUs) in the Vila Nova community of Juazeiro do Norte (CE); the project focused on making educational toys out of solid waste with children aged 5 to 11. It is an applied, qualitative, and descriptive study based on play-based workshops, discussion circles, participant observation, and descriptive records. The project involved approximately 24 children and five university students, resulting in the creation of about 24 toys and the repurposing of an estimated 6 kg of waste (PET bottles, cardboard, bottle caps, rubber, and aluminum). The results indicate increased awareness regarding proper waste disposal; cognitive, motor, and socio-emotional development; strengthened community ties; and a closer connection between the university and local needs—all in alignment with the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and Sustainable Development Goal 12 (responsible consumption and production). The discussion highlights the potential of play-based reverse logistics as a concrete way to introduce the circular economy into children's daily lives, while also addressing limitations regarding scale, resources, and continuity. In the concluding remarks, it is argued that similar initiatives can be expanded and systematized as permanent environmental education strategies in schools and community facilities.
