In the present work, we intend to present a brief conceptualization of literature, endeavor that aims to meet the unique importance that literary art has for teaching, culminating with considerations about literary literacy and with the delineation of a teaching proposal according to prerogatives of this, showing the symbology in the poem “The River of my Village, by Alberto Caeiro, heteronym of Fernando Pessoa. With all this, we hope to contribute to the visibility of literature in the context of teaching, not only as a discipline, but as a vehicle for the intersection of multiple contents and knowledge. By means of the chosen focus and the outlined objective, therefore, we aim to reach and demonstrate such potential of literary reading, using the elaborated teaching sequence, having as public the sophomore and senior high school students, as an example of the multiple possibilities of exploring the lines of the literary text.
