Abstract

This text has as main objective to highlight domestic education in Sergipe, in the Empire and beginning of the Republic this teaching practice ignored for a long time by historians in the field of education was widely present in the daily life of Sergipe society. The study was based on the conception of domestic instruction of Maria Celi Vasconcelos (2005), which refers to this practice of education as that carried out inside the student’s or master’s house, which happened and coexisted with the formal school. According to the author, in Rio de Janeiro, the teaching of the house disappears at the end of the nineteenth century due to the project of public schooling proclaimed along with the republican period in the country. However, in Sergipe domestic education seems to gain momentum and resists the initiatives of the State of centralization and unification of education. Thus, we start from the thesis that, although Brazil has public policies of public schooling for the entire population, the delay in developing politically, economically and socially, domestic education practices existed for a long time in the shadow of the formal school maintained by the state.
