Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the world. The only curative treatment for pancreatic cancer is the Whipple surgery, a major challenging surgery. Due to its complexity and importance in the treatment of pancreatic neoplasms, the aim of this study was to carry out an epidemiological analysis through the DATASUS platform of the Ministry of Health and were collected as number of admissions for Whipple surgery, hospital stay, number of deaths and mortality rate, from January 2011 to December 2020. In the last 10 years, 1,254 pancreatic-duodenectomy procedures were performed in Brazil, costing an average of R$3,799.41 each, hospital stay was around 17 .94 days, there were 225 deaths (17.94%). Of these, 187 procedures were in 2011, 164 in 2012, 151 in 2013, 156 in 2014, 127 in 2015, 114 in 2016, 93 in 2017, 93 in 2018, 91 in 2019 and 78 in 2020. There were 82 Whipple surgeries in the North, 345 in the Northeast, 588 in the Southeast, 150 in the South and 89 in the Midwest. There are technical factors that make pancreato-duodenectomy challenging and rarely performed, in addition to the high mortality and morbidity rate, which increases costs and hospitalization. Constant practice in large centers seems to improve the performance of this procedure. Furthermore, videolaparoscopy soon seems to stand out as a means of realization. However, it is necessary that this surgery is increasingly studied and performed in order to obtain more satisfactory results in the future.
