This article aims to provide an overview of the meme textual genre as a way to situate and present to the reader this new type of text that is already so present in our lives and so used by students. First, a definition in relation to the meme concept and then a brief explanation of the origin of the term. Soon after, the characteristics of this type of text and to conclude the importance of using it for the teaching of Portuguese Language aimed at the formation of digitally literate students.
