This article aims to situate the reader in relation to the reality, still unsatisfactory, of the teaching-learning process of reading and writing in Brazilian public schools, as well as presenting the contributions of the guiding documents whose objective is to guide the teacher both in the use of the curriculum and in the planning of its classes, providing the teaching of essential contents for basic education. In addition, it addresses, separately, important aspects of reading and writing that need to be incorporated into teaching practice in order to guarantee a more satisfactory language learning.
