Low socioeconomic status is a risk factor associated with the occurrence of burns and, according to the 2010 Gini coefficient, the state of Rio de Janeiro was considered the one with the greatest socioeconomic inequality in the Southeast region. Therefore, the present study aims to analyze the incidence of hospital admissions for burns by performing a comparative analysis between data from Brazilian hospitals and the state of Rio de Janeiro. This is an observational and cross-sectional study, carried out through the survey of secondary data on Hospital Morbidity in the Unified Health System, between January 2016 and December 2020. In Brazil, the mortality rate was 2,78, the male gender (63, 3%) and children aged 1 to 4 years (17,5%) were more affected. In Rio de Janeiro, the mortality rate was 7.18, males (63,3%) and adults aged 20 to 29 years (31,3%) were the most affected. The mortality rate registered in the state was approximately 3 times higher than in Brazil, 2,6 times higher than that of Hospital in Singapore and 2,3 times higher in relation to the Burn Hospital in China. In addition, medical expenses and the average hospital stay were also higher in Rio de Janeiro, which corroborates, together with mortality, that accidents are more serious in the state. Thus, the need to improve campaigns for the prevention of burns and first aid care is highlighted, mainly in Rio de Janeiro, which showed higher mortality among the victims.
