Most of the Brazilian prisons are in a degrading situation, without any concern for human rights and the offer of an adequate place for the restoration of the detainee, where the function is limited to punishing, without a medium to long term. This scenario does not match the true functions of the prison system, which, in addition to punishing and removing the offender from social life for a certain period, has the function of offering means for the re-education of the inmate, so that after serving his sentence, he does not return. to commit crimes and reintegrate into society correctly. From these premises, the study aims to analyze the challenges of managing a prison unit, which even with all the absence of structure, must ensure compliance with the law, aiming not only at punishment, but also at reeducation and future resocialization. of the condemned. The study is justified, from the view that there is rooted in part of the Brazilian population, the idea that the prison serves only to punish, which is a shallow reasoning, since it does not show a good strategy in the medium and long term, since that does not contribute to the reduction of recidivism rates, moreover, it is not in accordance with the constitutional precepts that guarantee human rights to all citizens. With the study, it is intended to collaborate with the deconstruction of this type of vision. To achieve the proposed objectives, the research will be based on a literature review, of a qualitative nature, with studies that focused on discussing the aforementioned terms and issues.
