CONTRIBUTIONS OF CHILD HEALTH CARE TO MONITORING CHILD DEVELOPMENT IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the contributions of child health monitoring (*puericultura*) to tracking child development within Primary Health Care (PHC). It is an integrative literature review involving searches in the SciELO, PubMed, and Periódicos Capes databases, using the descriptors "child health monitoring," "child development," and "primary health care." Articles published between 2022 and 2026 were included, resulting in the analysis of seven studies. The results demonstrate that child health monitoring serves as a structural axis for child care in PHC, enabling systematic monitoring of growth and development, early identification of risks, and the strengthening of bonds with families. Strategies such as mental health matrix support, the use of the Child Health Record (*Caderneta da Criança*), and play-based educational activities enhance the resolution capacity and comprehensiveness of care. The study concludes that child health monitoring is an essential practice for child development surveillance and health promotion within the Unified Health System (SUS), although challenges such as data under-reporting and the need for further staff training persist. The importance of investing in the quality of this practice is underscored to ensure the full development of children receiving care in PHC.
