THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTIVE LISTENING AS A COMMUNICATION STRATEGY IN FAMILY-CENTERED CARE

Abstract

Introduction: Family-Centered Care (FCC) and active listening are essential in complex pediatric care to humanize assistance and strengthen bonds. Objective: To investigate the influence of active listening on the quality of FCC in home-based pediatric care. Method: A qualitative field study conducted in Cascavel, Paraná, in partnership with the PAID, a program selected for its relevance in dehospitalization and the care of patients in palliative care. Data was collected from four family members through interviews analyzed using Content Analysis. Results: Active listening fostered maternal confidence and empowerment. Assertive communication eliminated doubts, and the professional bond ensured continuity of care, respecting family singularity. However, challenges emerged, such as superficial care and inadequate support during emergencies. Conclusion: Active listening is indispensable for consolidating FCC in the home setting, ensuring autonomy for caregivers. Despite the small sample size, the findings reinforce the need for continuous professional training.
