Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The use of digital technologies during childhood has intensified in recent decades, particularly with the growing popularity of digital games, raising concerns regarding their impact on children's emotional, cognitive, and social development, as well as their implications for public health. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of excessive digital game use during childhood on emotional regulation and its public health implications. METHODOLOGY: This is a qualitative literature review conducted between April and June 2026. Searches were performed in the SciELO, Google Scholar, PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, and VHL (BVS) databases using descriptors combined with Boolean operators. Full-text articles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish addressing the topic were included. After applying eligibility criteria, 11 studies were selected for analysis. Data were analyzed descriptively and interpretatively, using thematic categorization. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Findings indicate that excessive digital game use during childhood is associated with impairments in emotional regulation, including attention deficits, impulsivity, irritability, and increased vulnerability to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Cognitive and social repercussions—such as impairments in language, social interaction, and emotional self-regulation—were also evident. Furthermore, potential neurobiological impacts related to brain maturation and the functioning of reward and stress systems were identified. However, some studies point to potential cognitive benefits when games are used in a mediated and controlled manner. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that excessive digital game use during childhood poses a risk factor for emotional and behavioral development, requiring attention from health professionals, educators, and families. There is a need for intersectoral strategies and public policies aimed at promoting the conscious use of digital technologies and preventing harm to children's mental health.
