This article aims to reflect the literacy process in the early stages of elementary education, recognizing its importance for the progress of students' communicative and cognitive skills. Literacy refers to the ability to decipher writing and understand the basic functioning of the alphabetic system, encompassing the skills of reading and writing. On the other hand, literacy expands this idea, encompassing learning, reading, and writing in diverse social and cultural contexts, including fundamental linguistic practices for inclusion and participation in today's society. During the first years of elementary school, it is essential that literacy be addressed in conjunction with literacy. This is because simply learning reading and writing techniques does not ensure that the student will be able to use these skills effectively outside of school. This connection is vital for the student's complete development, promoting skills that include critical interpretation, text production, and active participation in diverse language communities. The appropriate educational approach should emphasize methods that highlight the semiotic importance of language, ensuring that students have the opportunity to interact with a variety of textual genres, communicative contexts, and information technology resources, thus promoting relevant and contextualized learning. Additionally, it is essential to recognize the cultural and linguistic particularities of students in order to develop an inclusive and effective teaching process. Thus, literacy and reading comprehension in the early years of elementary school are fundamental for improving reading and writing skills, which are essential for academic success and the formation of citizens.
