ECONOMIC IMPACT OF HOSPITALIZATIONS DUE TO DIABETES MELLITUS: ANALYSIS OF THE 10TH HEALTH REGION OF PARANÁ, THE STATE OF PARANÁ, AND BRAZIL (2018–2023)

Objective: to analyze the economic impact of hospitalizations due to diabetes mellitus in the 10th Health Region of Paraná, in the state of Paraná and in Brazil, from 2018 to 2023. Methods: observational, retrospective, ecological study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS), available through DATASUS. Hospital expenditures were analyzed according to sex and geographic coverage. Results: in the 10th Health Region of Paraná, total expenditure was R$ 1,050,861.41, with slight predominance of females. In the state of Paraná, total expenditure reached R$ 40,457,929.60, with slight male predominance. Nationally, the Southeast Region accounted for the highest expenditures, followed by the Northeast and South regions. Conclusion: diabetes mellitus represents an important economic burden for the Unified Health System, reinforcing the need for prevention strategies, early diagnosis and strengthening of primary health care.
