Abstract

This article analyzes the exceptional phenomenon of the adultification of children and adolescents in the digital environment and the limits of the legal protection provided by the Brazilian Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA). The constant presence of children and adolescents on social media has intensified their exposure to behavioral and aesthetic standards typically associated with adult life, which may compromise their physical, psychological, and social development. In this context, the study aims to verify whether the ECA is sufficient to address the risks arising from adultification on the internet or whether complementary legislation is necessary. The theoretical framework is based on the analysis of the principles of integral protection and the best interests of children and adolescents, as well as on the discussion of vulnerabilities existing in the digital environment. The methodology adopted is qualitative in nature, with an exploratory and descriptive approach, using bibliographic research and analysis of relevant legislation. The results indicate that, although the ECA constitutes an important instrument of protection, it still presents limitations in the face of new digital dynamics. In this context, special attention is given to the recent approval of the Digital Child and Adolescent Status in March 2026, as an attempt to update the legal framework aimed at protecting minors in virtual environments. Therefore, the integral protection of children and adolescents in the digital environment requires constant legislative updating and joint action by the States, family, and society.
