DIFFICULTIES FACING THE PRISON SYSTEM

Abstract

This article initially aims to present a brief overview of the prison system in Brazil. The Brazilian penitentiary system requires close attention to several relevant aspects that currently plague the vast majority of penal establishments. Thus, we cite some of the main causes of chaos in the system, such as overcrowding, lack of hygiene, escapes, gang warfare, among others that could also be listed. Also significantly relevant is the fact that society believes that prisoners should lose not only their freedom, but above all, their human dignity; the latter being a fundamental principle guaranteed by the 1988 Federal Constitution.
