This study analyzes the nature of children's and youth literature as a tool for human and aesthetic formation. The investigation addresses the genre's historical trajectory, from the oral tradition to the consolidation of an authentic national identity in Brazil. It discusses the specificities of texts designed for readers in formation, highlighting the dynamic relationship between word and image and the sensory value of the physical object. Reading mediation is presented as a practice founded on four pillars aimed at pleasure and artistic enjoyment. BNCC guidelines reinforce the necessity of distancing the book from purely grammatical tasks to foster readers who read for enjoyment. Finally, the study reflects on the dialogues between literary art and digital technologies as a means of expanding critical literacy in the contemporary.
