Abstract

Military police activity is characterized by high levels of exposure to occupational stressors, which directly impact officers’ mental health and, consequently, the operational readiness of public security institutions. In this context, the present study aims to analyze mental health as a strategic variable for police performance, proposing an integrated model for the prevention of psychological distress applicable to the Military Police of Paraná, Brazil. The research was conducted through a literature review of national and international studies on police mental health, combined with documentary analysis of institutional practices. The findings indicate that chronic occupational stress, when not properly managed, compromises decision-making capacity, operational performance, and the quality of services delivered to society. As a central contribution, this study proposes an institutional model structured around four complementary axes: institutional psychological support, strengthening of peer support networks, development of organizational leadership, and integration of spirituality and police volunteerism as psychosocial protective factors. As a case study, the Military Catholic Camp of the Paraná Military Police is highlighted, demonstrating the potential of institutional volunteerism and spiritual assistance in building support networks, enhancing psychological resilience, and promoting personnel well-being. It is concluded that mental health should be understood as a strategic component of police management, being essential for maintaining operational readiness, reducing institutional risks, and strengthening organizational efficiency in military police forces.
