The following work is a literature review on acne scars, aiming to elucidate the aesthetic dysfunction and its classifications, evaluate the instruments used, describe the causes and the aesthetic-functional diagnosis, and identify treatment options. The methodology for data collection was carried out through a literature review of 20 published articles, extracted from the PubMed, SciELO, and BVS databases. The study addresses the psychosocial and genetic implications linked to acne scars, as well as presenting a multifactorial approach that influences the choice of treatment and diagnosis of this dysfunction. Thus, it confirms the efficiency and that the treatment is gradual, using one or more resources available and reviewed in this study.
