At the international level, there are two legal documents related to asylum: the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, which has global coverage, and the Cartagena Declaration, which is aimed at Latin American and Central American countries. The overall objective of this study is to discuss asylum based on two international documents: the Refugee Convention and the Cartagena Declaration. The methodology used was to research legislation, doctrines, master's theses, and various articles on refugees, using a descriptive, explanatory, and quantitative approach. It was possible to conclude that the documents under analysis are of paramount importance with regard to the protection of refugees at the international level, enabling various countries to have legislation at their disposal focused on the issue of refugees, granting various rights and duties to refugees and the commitment of States that adopt these laws to work towards the defense of these individuals.
