This article aimed to present a reflection on the history of Early Childhood Education, reviewing its development from the initial welfare-oriented perspective to its recognition as an educational right. Through a historical overview, we addressed the conceptions of childhood across different periods, the emergence of the first institutions dedicated to the education and care of children, as well as the consolidation of Early Childhood Education in Brazil as the first stage of basic education. The analysis highlights legislative advances and contemporary challenges, reinforcing the importance of valuing childhood, professional training, and the construction of pedagogical practices that respect children’s rights and needs.
