The present study aimed to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using social media in the classroom within the teaching–learning process of microbiology. The methodology adopted consisted of a bibliographic and descriptive study with a qualitative approach, based on the analysis of scientific articles, books, and academic documents published in recent years on the subject. The results indicate that the use of social media can promote meaningful learning, increase student engagement, encourage collaboration, and facilitate access to updated scientific content. However, disadvantages were also identified, such as distractions, inappropriate use of platforms, and the need for adequate pedagogical guidance. It is concluded that social media, when used in a planned manner and mediated by the teacher, can become effective pedagogical tools in microbiology education, contributing to educational innovation.
