Symbolic play, or pretend play, is a crucial childhood activity (ages 2-7) that fosters cognitive, emotional, social, and linguistic development through imagination, role-playing, and creative object use. Piaget emphasizes the symbolic function, Vygotsky highlights social mediation, and Winnicott underscores the potential space. Shaped by culture, it enhances creativity, empathy, and language skills. In early childhood education, it serves as a pedagogical tool for integrated learning, requiring playful environments with recycled materials and thematic corners. Teachers mediate play but face challenges like limited time, space, and training. The BNCC (2017) stresses its importance, calling for its prioritization to ensure holistic development.
