Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the selective caries removal technique using Papacárie Duo®, a chemomechanical agent based on papain and chloramine. Dental caries is one of the most prevalent oral diseases worldwide, demanding minimally invasive therapeutic strategies that ensure the preservation of healthy tooth structure and promote patient comfort, especially in pediatric dentistry. This work presents and analyzes a clinical case involving an 8-year-old patient treated at the UNINASSAU School Clinic in Brasília, in which Papacárie Duo® was used for the removal of infected dentin without the need for rotary instruments or anesthesia. The gel allowed selective debridement of the softened tissue, ensuring pulpal vitality and resulting in a positive clinical experience with absence of pain or postoperative sensitivity. The cavity was restored with glass ionomer cement, consistent with minimally invasive dentistry principles due to its adhesive and bioactive properties. The clinical outcomes corroborate the literature, which highlights the effectiveness, biocompatibility, and patient acceptance of chemomechanical caries removal methods. The findings indicate that Papacárie Duo® is a viable and safe alternative for conservative caries management, although further longitudinal studies are necessary to assess long-term restoration performance.
