This article aims to address the principle of autonomy within the field of bioethics, analyzing its application in situations involving conflicts between personal freedom and the protection of life and health. The study seeks to examine how this principle is interpreted and limited in the face of ethical and legal dilemmas, especially in cases such as the refusal of blood transfusions by Jehovah’s Witnesses and in discussions on mandatory vaccination. It aims to understand how autonomy, although essential, must be balanced with other values in light of jurisprudential interpretations. The research is justified by the current relevance of the topic, given the recent health crises and the religious pluralism present in Brazil, which demand the formulation of ethically and legally grounded solutions to guide the actions of health and legal professionals.
