Abstract

This article sought to address anticipatory grief and the emotional challenges surrounding it, especially in the context of terminal illnesses. The study aimed to analyze the psychological factors involved in this process, understand the impact of a terminal diagnosis on family members and caregivers, and discuss the influence of sociocultural aspects on how this experience is experienced. To this end, a qualitative, descriptive study was conducted, based on a literature review of scientific works published between 2015 and 2025. The results show that anticipatory grief is marked by feelings of sadness, fear, helplessness, and anxiety, manifesting as an ambiguous process between presence and absence. It was also observed that, despite its relevance, the topic of death is still surrounded by taboos and social silencing, which intensifies the suffering of those facing farewell. Furthermore, it was found that coping strategies vary according to the uniqueness of each individual. It is concluded that understanding and giving visibility to anticipatory grief is essential for promoting acceptance, strengthening bonds and a healthier elaboration of this process.
