Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the impacts of internet use and social media on the mental health of adolescents and young adults, considering both emotional and behavioral aspects. The study employed a literature review of national and international research, with data from Brazil (Sergipe) and Colombia, allowing the identification of usage patterns and potential psychological consequences. The findings indicate that excessive use of these platforms is associated with symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, boredom, and stress, and may promote digital dependency behaviors. Social media also significantly influences self-esteem and psychological well-being, especially among Generation Z individuals. The analysis suggests that mediation strategies, such as family supervision and digital education, can reduce negative effects, promoting healthier technology use. It is concluded that balanced internet use is essential for adolescents' and young adults' mental health, with awareness and family dialogue being key tools for preventing emotional and behavioral problems related to excessive use of these platforms.
