In this article, we analyze the role of local knowledge, focusing on initiation rites in Mozambique, considering the paradigmatic evolution of modernity, post-modernity, and hypermodernity. We explore how local knowledge was marginalized in modernity, resurged in post-modernity, and became exaggerated in hypermodernity. To achieve our objective, through a bibliographic research methodology supported by techniques of textual hermeneutics and comparative analysis, we examine Mozambique's current position within this paradigmatic spectrum, highlighting that the country has not fully embraced modernity, facing a complex coexistence of values in urban and rural areas. The results reveal that urban areas exhibit hypermodern traits, with a quest for brands, aestheticized consumption, and hypermodern values. In rural areas, traditional values persist but are challenged by modernization and urbanization. We conclude that Mozambique is at a crucial juncture in its paradigmatic trajectory, facing challenges in preserving initiation rites. We recommend a balance between the promotion of local knowledge and adaptation to modern influences, involving the community and researchers in ongoing dialogue. It is essential to value and preserve Mozambique's rich cultural heritage in the contemporary context, promoting harmony between local knowledge and modern understanding.
