Abstract

This article aims to provide an integrative analysis of the challenges of workforce management in health care within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Based on a review of national scientific literature, including contributions from Public Health authors, publications were examined that address the organization of health work, the management models adopted, the appreciation of health workers, labor conditions, and the impact of these dimensions on the quality of care provided. The findings reveal that workforce management in the SUS faces historical and structural barriers, such as precarious employment relationships, high staff turnover, work overload, and fragile processes of training and continuing education. On the other hand, successful experiences point to possible pathways, such as the adoption of participatory management practices, the appreciation of interdisciplinary teams, and the strengthening of care centered on users’ needs. It is concluded that overcoming the challenges of workforce management in the SUS requires institutional commitment to integrated public policies, adequate funding, and strengthening of care, management, and training processes in daily health services.
