Abstract

Reviewing some laws that express the guarantee of Brazilian education and in view of the astonishing number of illiterate people, a certain concern arose, generating some questions: Why are there so many illiterate people in Brazil, if education has been the main theme defended by the authorities responsible for its conduct? What has hindered compliance with the regulations that shed light on the literacy process? It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, there are exorbitant rates of people who have not had access to school or who have not been covered by the excellent educational laws. The illiteracy figures sadden society, which, in turn, cries out for an intervention in the educational system. It is intolerable that amidst so many theories pertinent to education, part of society lives in the darkness of formal knowledge. In fact, when education is not prioritized as the true transformative process, opportunities for regression are created. The unsatisfactory results of the educational process are often consequences of disobedience to its regulations. The high number of illiterate people in Brazil raises a warning for the future and signals the urgent need for public policies in the education sector. During this production, some theorists were consulted and some official sources were considered.
