PREVENTIVE EXTRACTION OF THIRD MOLARS

The removal of third molars, popularly known as “wisdom tooth extraction”, is a procedure frequently performed in dental offices. However, the preventive removal of third molars has been debated with incompatible opinions among Dental Surgeons. This research aims to address the topic of Preventive Extraction of Third Molars, given the problem of damage caused to the patient in the prolonged retention of this organ, such as caries lesions, resorption of the roots of adjacent teeth, periocoronitis, appearance of cysts and odontogenic tumors. However, the question is: is it really feasible to adhere to the preventive extraction of third molars? The general objective of this Scientific Article is to describe the indications for the preventive extraction of third molars. Then, presenting the specific objectives on how to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this choice, as well as highlighting the complications, difficulties and losses generated to the patient from the surgical procedure. The methodology chosen for the work and documentary bibliographic research is through the survey of bibliographic references and review of literature in the area of dentistry. The final results show that the literature is biased towards the extraction of third molars with some associated pathology, making periodic monitoring of this element necessary in order to visualize a consistently positive prognosis for the patient. It is concluded that each patient has their own anatomical particularities and it is the professional's role to make the correct diagnosis in order to provide individual treatment alternatives.
