This article analyzes the complex relationship between the Brazilian State and gambling, covering historical, political, economic and social aspects. The study revisits the phases of prohibition and attempts to legalize gambling, with an emphasis on the impact of these policies on society. The research explores the recent growth in sports betting, encouraged by Law No. 13,756/2018, and its potential economic benefits, such as increased tax collection and job creation. On the other hand, it also examines possible negative consequences, such as increased gambling addiction and associated crime. Furthermore, the work discusses the conflicting interests of different social and political groups regarding the legalization of gaming. The analysis is complemented by a bibliographic and documentary review, offering a comprehensive and balanced view of the topic, with the aim of informing the public debate.
