Abstract

The present work aims to address Ethnocentrism and Eugenics as elements that for many decades in a certain way valued attitudes of racial prejudice in Brazil, after the abolition of slavery, allowing racist people, in everyday life, to refer to black people (men , woman, elderly person, child) using expressions, comments, jokes, which affected the self-esteem of those who received such verbalizations. These attitudes, for the most part, present phenotypic characteristics, such as hair type, comparing them with the phenotype of European people, with white skin, and always leaving the feeling that the Eurocentric model would be superior. This ethnocentric attitude was disseminated even in the mass media. With Law No. 14,532, of January 11, 2023, which classifies racial insult as a crime of racism, a Law that amended Law No. 7,716, of January 5, 1989 (Racial Crime Law), and the Decree-Law No. 2,848, of December 7, 1940 (Penal Code), there is a change in this stance, making these attitudes crimes and creating a scenario where harmful attitudes will no longer be allowed.
