Introduction: Histrionic personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by overly emotional behavior and constant attention-seeking, significantly impacting the interpersonal relationships and daily functioning of affected individuals. The need for an accurate diagnosis and effective therapeutic interventions is crucial for the proper management of this disorder. Objective: The aim of this study was to carry out a literature review on histrionic personality disorder (HPD), addressing its characteristics, diagnosis and therapeutic approaches. Methods: The review included a systematic search of scientific literature published between 2009 and 2024, using the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. We selected original studies and reviews published in peer-reviewed journals, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, which investigated the characteristics, diagnosis and therapeutic approaches of PTH. Results and Discussion: HSD is characterized by dramatic behaviour, emotional superficiality and incessant attention-seeking. The diagnosis must be differentiated from other personality disorders using the DSM-5-TR criteria. Therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy, have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms. Group therapy and social skills training are also important. Comorbidity with other psychiatric conditions may require a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Conclusion: This review highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and integrated therapeutic interventions for the effective management of PTSD. Ongoing training of mental health professionals and future research are essential to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for individuals with BPH.
