The maternal instinct is defined by the mother's care for her newborn, this includes primary care, social interactions, breastfeeding, as colostrum is extremely important for the healthy development of the offspring, protection against possible dangers and predators. It is known that a good maternal instinct is a fundamental component for the survival and growth of the offspring. The management of orphan foals is a major challenge in equine neonatology, because it requires frequent care and intensive work, as this is when the foal needs more effective nutritional care.
