Abstract

This article highlights the contributions of linguistic studies in the teaching of the mother tongue, with the general objective of emphasizing the importance of the teacher having awareness and more comprehensive knowledge about the science of Sociolinguistics: what it is, what it means and what are its proposals for the teaching of the Portuguese language in the classroom. It is also intended to show that, through the acquisition of this knowledge, it is possible to apply it in the context of the classroom as a method of communication, because, through the students' discourse, we can identify their facilities and difficulties. The form of personal expression, "speech", should not be seen with prejudice nor should it serve as a parameter for comparisons, but should be used to improve pedagogical practices and be the basis for encouraging each student to expand their language, seeking other ways of expressing themselves, building a reflection on the diversity of our language and becoming aware of the importance of acquiring knowledge of the standard norm.
