this article aims to reflect in a bibliographical study on the importance of literacy in everyday life of the people in order to contribute with new practices to the learning process of reading and writing. The present study presents procedures and strategies for understanding the new context of literacy and literacy within the educational setting and new educational needs. Discusses the role of the teacher in front of the new forms of teaching and learning under the perspective of inserting new teaching methodologies that guarantee the quality of students ' learning, from the perspective of that reading and writing become increasingly indispensable for the insertion of the individual in society. Finally, it is suggested that the practices of reading and writing are reflected by schools, developing awareness of what learners need to learn more than decode words, they need to understand them, find meaning in what is taught.
