Abstract

Cochlear implants are a fundamental intervention for children with severe to profound hearing loss, providing significant improvements in hearing and speech outcomes. This systematic review analyzed 45 studies that evaluated the results of cochlear implants in children. The results demonstrated a consistent improvement in hearing thresholds, speech perception, auditory discrimination, speech production and understanding, and language development. However, the variability in results highlighted the importance of considering individual factors such as age at implantation, duration of deafness, and early intervention. Active parental involvement in hearing and speech therapy was also crucial to optimizing outcomes. Although many children have achieved success with cochlear implants, some persistent challenges have been identified, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to provide ongoing support. In conclusion, cochlear implants represent an effective intervention to promote auditory and language development in deaf children, but an individualized approach and ongoing support are essential to optimize long-term results.
