The abandonment of older adults is a social problem that has become increasingly evident due to population aging and the weakening of family and social bonds. This study aimed to analyze the psychosocial consequences of elderly abandonment, identify factors associated with this reality, and discuss the role of nursing in caring for this population. This is a qualitative study conducted through an integrative literature review based on scientific articles published in health-related databases. The results showed that abandonment is related to family, social, economic, and cultural factors and is often associated with neglect. The main consequences identified include social isolation, emotional suffering, loss of autonomy, and reduced quality of life. It is concluded that nursing plays a fundamental role in the early identification of these situations, in providing support, and in promoting comprehensive care aimed at protecting and improving the health and well-being of older adults.
