Violence against older adults constitutes an important public health problem, presenting itself in a multifaceted way and associated with high levels of underreporting, which makes its real measurement and the planning of response actions difficult. This study aimed, in general, to understand the role of nursing in addressing violence against older adults in Brazil, considering the processes of identification, reception, and referral in health services. It is an integrative literature review, with a qualitative approach and descriptive nature, which aimed to gather, organize, and analyze scientific productions related to violence against older adults and nursing strategies in the care and protection of this population. The results showed that nursing plays a fundamental role in the early identification of situations of violence, in carrying out educational actions, and in guiding family members and caregivers, in addition to the importance of mandatory reporting and coordination with the protection network. Furthermore, the relevance of the qualified performance of the nurse was highlighted, based on humanized care, active listening, and interdisciplinary work, as an essential strategy for addressing violence. Therefore, it is concluded that the role of nursing is essential for the prevention, identification, and addressing of violence against the elderly, contributing to the improvement of care, strengthening of public policies, and promotion of protection and dignity for this population.
